What Is a Category BE Trailer Licence?

A Category BE licence allows drivers to tow larger trailers with a car, jeep or light van where the vehicle-and-trailer combination is above the standard Category B towing limit.

Category BE is commonly needed for drivers towing horseboxes, livestock trailers, caravans, boats, work trailers, plant trailers and larger utility trailers.

Before starting Category BE training, you should confirm that you have the correct driving licence, learner permit, theory test requirements and vehicle-and-trailer combination for your needs.

Category B and BE: What Is the Difference?

Licence category	What it generally covers	Common use
Category B	A car, jeep or light van with a small trailer, or a trailer combination within the Category B towing limits.	Small trailers, light domestic towing and lower-weight combinations.

How Category BE Trailer Training Works

I have had a couple of lessons already with Gareth. At first sight he is enthusiastic even in the wee hours of the morning. What I appreciate most is that he gives me the opportunity to try manoeuvres myself few times and then encourages me to analyse what went wrong. When I have situational questions he explains what needs done and the logic behind the reasoning and gives examples or show me it when the opportunity comes. Gareth always takes into account the areas I tell him I struggle with and tailors the lessons accordingly. He never makes me feel stupid or embarrassed, he patiently explains what needs to be done in a clear logical way. We have a quick debrief after the lessons that also help clarify things we discussed while I was driving and maybe didn’t fully absorb. His respectful and calm teaching style means I don’t feel nervous during lessons. I can be honest about my weaknesses because I know he will focus on helping me overcome them and build my confidence. I started training with Ross Smith under the reduced EDT in January, and he didn’t just give me the rules for the sake of it. He actually explained the practical aspect behind every rule, helping me bring that into practice. He tailored the lessons perfectly based on my previous driving history and correcting any bad habits I picked up over last 10 years, instead of just mechanically going through lessons.

Passed my driving test today with airport driving school. I couldnt recommend them enough. I was an extremely nervous driver and after failing my test a few years ago it knocked me back and put me off sitting it again. So I booked in for a couple of lessons with Derek, he made me feel so at ease and built up my confidence to go and sit the test again. I then had a mock test with John and another lesson with Des I couldn’t recommend these three lads more they all helped me out so much and I could never thank them enough for helping me to get to where I wanted to be and passing my test. I recently done a bus test with Airport Driving School in order to start a career with Bus Eireann, i had 2 excellent instructors in Jason And Ciaran and i always felt with their guidance that i would pass the test, but for me the cornerstone to success was the mock tests that i had to do, i done them with Tom and i will take his tuition with me everywhere i go he was fantastic but though, he really opened my eyes to the bigger picture, yes this was about the driving test but it was also something for me to take with me for future situations. ill never forget the guys and would like to thank the entire team at Airport Driving school for there excellent service.

Derek is an excellent driving instructor! Both my boyfriend Mike and I did lessons with Derek and passed! I passed my test first time! Before I did lessons with Airport Driving School, I did not feel confident driving and was sure I would fail my first test but Derek got my driving up to the necessary standard and helped me to gain confidence behind the wheel. After renewing my learner permit for the fourth time, I decided it was time to try again. From the very first lesson, Derek was very calm, professional, down to earth and a great laugh too.
